There are more games per day than an infinite number of monkeys would be able to play. However, as a simple chimp, I have compiled a list of 14 recently released indie games that have fallen under the radar of the gaming press. With over eight billion genres represented, there must be something you’ll like.
I stress that these are not (with the exception of one) games that I have played. As such, I cannot vouch for their quality. But after turning off a bugle call so that indie developers could get in touch with games they released with little attention, these were a few that I was able to squeeze from the mountain of emails that quickly consumed me and all my family.
Newly released in early access on the Epic store, Against The Storm is a “roguelike city builder”, set in a fantasy world where it never stops raining. It’s not a fantasy world, it’s England. Although, admittedly, we have few talking beavers here. It’s about trying to improve a city, as something called Blightstorm gets closer and closer
Although I haven’t played any of the other games on this list, I have played Tux and Fanny, and this is one of my favorite games of 2021. You can read why here, but let me summarize by saying this is a game about friendship, goblin appeasement, and insect existential crises. You can also play the role of the cat. It’s so dense with details, extras, minigames, songs, dances, monstrous flies, and music, and you should buy it right now. The link to Itch is above, but it’s also on Switch, too much.
Already released, free via Itch, The One Who Struggles is a game entirely composed of a multi-phased boss fight. Which, if you’re me, sounds incredibly off-putting until you learn about its incredible difficulty options. You can decide for yourself how many lives you have, how many jumps you are allowed, how much damage you deal, the boss’s HP. It can be as difficult or as easy as you want. “Why put this kind of functionality in a game that you can complete in 15 minutes? Asks developer DW O’Boyle. “Because I believe this stuff should be in all games. Amen.
A visual horror novel (I’m so glad the genre is more than romances these days), where you play as Nick, a recent high school graduate, taken to a cabin in the woods for winter break. Nothing can go wrong! Or else, otherwise. There’s a murder to solve in this one, as well as a bunch of endings to find.
A combination of sokoban and Snake? That’s enough to convince me to take a look at it. Featured with cute 16-bit graphics, it’s all about helping a magical giraffe find its stolen hats. Don’t want to help a magical giraffe find its stolen hats? Monster.

Inkle, the small team behind huge hits like 80 Days, Sorcery! and Pendragon, just released a two-part novelization of their most publicized game, Heaven’s Vault. Written by Jon Ingold of Inkle, they tell the story of Aliya Elasra, the translator of the Ancient One, that lost language of the Nebula. They are available in paper and paperback editions, and are stories, rather than a new set of translation puzzles!
Do you know what’s wrong with chess? Not enough blood. Fortunately, this has been changed in Pawnbarian by j4nw. Creator Jan Wojtecki describes it as “a thoughtful roguelike puzzle, in which you use chess moves to assassinate sprawling monsters.” I’m here, right here, for it. It was recently released on Steam and needs a lot more eyes.
A visual novel by Sugar Rush Studios, I’m intrigued because it’s not a romance, but rather an eyesore. Inspired by Lovecraft (hey, everyone you can stop saying that now – you are inspired by a century of horror inspired by Lovecraft, may the old racist be dead), it’s about uncovering the sinister story of ‘a family, with your choices meant to affect the fate of your relationships.
Another unique take on the visual novel is Henchmen Story. You play the henchman of a supervillain, but your boss is an idiot. But, you know, he provides health care. Everything is fully dubbed, and in the trailer above you can see that this is top quality vocal work. It also looks pretty funny! This just came out last month, and I’m installing it right now.
Closed Hands has been out on Itch for a while, but just arrived on Steam. This is an interactive fictional play about the lives of five aliens, whose lives become entangled after a terrorist attack. It is created by a team called PASSENGER Games, led by Dan Hett, who lost his brother in the 2017 terrorist attack on Manchester Arena in England. You can read a lot more about the game in a great article from Rob Purchese from Eurogamer.
I love the way Slide immediately reminded me of the Newly released Exo One, but like Mario Kart. These are cute animals racing! But knowing how to swim, they can also dive while sliding. It offers local co-op for up to eight players (supported by Steam’s Remote Play Together and single player modes, and looks so cute and adorable.
As you probably know, the big deal with Tic Tac Toe / Noughts & Crosses is that a match between two smart adults will end in a draw. So what is the solution ? To simply clear all your games at the same time, at the same time as your opponent, and see who wins! That’s the premise of Tic Tac Together, a two-player game that turns the futile paper game into a frenzied and extremely silly digital game. But, you cry, what happens when two players put their mark in the same space? Well, sure, that starts a whole new game of Tic Tac Toe to see who wins the spot. And yes, it is getting as recursive as you can imagine.
Rocket Jump Technology’s King Under The Mountain just released in Early Access yesterday. Unlike me, you are not put off by extremely elaborate simulation games, in which you create vast realms by asking your growing population to complete 90 million specific tasks, so there is a good chance that you are. interested in this one. During this time, I will politely watch YouTube and wish I had been better.
I was watching the Lucent Bounds trailer from Peartree Games and I was like “OK, sure, but what …” and then the little cube you are controlling stretched in the air, to propel itself towards the forward, then flattened into a thin square so it could drift smoothly to the next platform, and I was sold. It just came out two days ago, and not only does it look pretty, but it’s something I’m craving more and more in games: anyway. I can’t wait to try this.
