UPDATE 6/15/21, 23: In the same way as Sonic made surprise roly-poly appearance in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD, it looks like the Blue Hedgehog will make a playable return in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania – and this time with Tails in tow.
An enterprising Internet sleuth (as spotted by Sonic Sonic Stadium fan site) went snooping at Sega New Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania site launched and – presumably through a combination of curiosity, cunning, and guesswork – uncovered the currently hidden art for a potentially playable Sonic and Tails.
You can see for yourself! Scroll down to the Characters section and you’ll find six boxes, each featuring one of Monkey Ball’s familiar playable rosters. Obviously, the site layout leaves enough room for two more characters – and the manual modification of the image paths so that the portrait and ball art ends with sonic.png or tails.png reveals Sonic and Tails hidden versions of both:
So there you have it – potentially two fun little additions to a game that has already thrilled Monkey Ball fans. Presumably, Sega will reveal more soon.
UPDATE 6/15/21, 5:21 PM: After yesterday’s leaks, Sega has confirmed that Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania is indeed a thing and will arrive on Switch, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, and Steam on October 5 of this year.
But what is Banana Mania? Well, as keen-eyed fans had deduced, this is a remaster of Super Monkey Ball Deluxe from 2005 – which combines the original Super Monkey Ball, its sequel, and new content never before seen in any of these games. .
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania arrives in time for the 20th anniversary of the Super Monkey Ball series, and you can get a glimpse of its action in the trailer below.
ORIGINAL STORY 6/14/21: Sega may not be quite done with its spherically installed simians yet; Images have surfaced for a new entry in the long-running Super Monkey Ball series, this one titled Banana Mania, which is supposed to make its way to Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Series X / S.
The images in question, shared by freelance journalist Nils Ahrensmeier on Twitter earlier today, reportedly showing PlayStation 5 and Switch box art for Banana Mania, alongside four generally cheerful screenshots from the game.

One of those shots teases a return for Monkey Ball’s beloved board game, Monkey Target, while the others are a bit harder to pin down. However, a few savvy Monkey Ball fans are currently do deductive work and speculating that the images may well point to a 2005 Super Monkey Ball Deluxe remake, which merged the first two Monkey Ball games with all-new content.
Sega’s last foray into the world of Monkey Ball came in 2019, when it released an HD remaster of the widely unloved Wii Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz. The remaster finally proved nicer than many expected, so a refresh for a more memorable title such as Super Monkey Ball Deluxe would definitely appeal.
Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD – Trailer.
Obviously, we won’t know anything for sure until Sega makes it official, but it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time we’ve heard the name Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania; the mysterious title appeared in an Australian Classification Board list earlier this year. Maybe that will all be revealed tomorrow at Nintendo’s E3 Direct.
